What were the struggles of the Maya Civilization when they were colonized?

By the time of the conquistadors, they had some serious issues with not existing as a civilization anymore. So I suppose they would be living a common, native existence, but always remembering their heritage as justification that they are smarter and more civilized than the other hunter-gatherers and subsistence farmers around them.
