Laura davies tee shot?

while watching the LPGA tournament today in Toledo, Ohio, I noticed that Laura Davies hits her tee shots not using a tee. Instead, she uses the gr as a tee by making a devot with her wedge that stands up about an inch and a half. She then sets her ball on the mound she has made, using it as a tee. Does anyone know why she does this? Is it something that is actually good to do? Or is a way to save money on buying tees? haha
