Are there different qualities to MRIs or are there better tests?

The orthopaedic surgeon that we saw today told us that my sons knee needed surgery. This is a total shock because my son and I don't believe it's that bad! He just twisted in during a routine running play in football practice. He didn't cry, whimper, or even complain...just "ma, I twisted my knee today"... since it hurt a little to put full pressure on it, we decided to take it easy and not go to practice for a few days to let it heal properly. The trainer at school said to get an MRI just for precautionary measures. We did. We were prepared for the result to be "aw, he's fine, just rest it and he will be back in business soon"... But instead the surgeon (who of course makes his living on surgery) says "I see torn fibers" I said "a lot or a little"? he couldnt tell me. I said, If there were 1,000s are there 100s torn or just a few? He couldn't tell me, I asked him if I could get a huge picture of it and he somehow went around that question. I want to see my sons ACL up close and personal! Is there any way for me to see it? I live in Port Richey, FL and am interested in going as far as Tampa to the big hospital... someone, please advise.
